You will be taught by a team who have been part of an emergency service or
an armed service, bringing a wide range of experience to your learning
environment. You will develop the personal skills and qualities that could help
lead to a career in an emergency response service, such as the Ambulance
service, the Fire and Rescue service or the Police service; or one of the Armed
services, such as the Royal Navy, the Army or the RAF.
All of the courses work to develop teamwork and communication through practical tasks such as problem solving, outdoor activities and conservation work. You will need a required level of fitness to participate. When the tasks are complete you review your performance and reflect on how to make improvements. These skills are highly valued by the public services. The sessions mostly take place in the classroom or the learning resource centre. You will find out about the range of public services through research and from guest speakers. You will develop your understanding of the uniformed public services, what they expect from their recruits and how the services fit within the structure of society. You will collect a portfolio of your assessed work throughout your course, which may include leaflets, posters, reports, presentations and journals. There are no exams at the end of the course.
As part of your course you will also participate in public service one day a week. You will be able to choose between:
Both will require you to work as part of a team, possibly getting wet and dirty! If you want a course which is a blend of thinking, communicating and doing, Public Services may be the right choice for you.
