The PRIDE Lucozade Combine

Filton College’s American Football Academy, the PRIDE, has been given the experience of a professional combine with Matt Furber, from Lucozade’s Sports Science Team. A Combine is a collection of sports drills put together to test a person’s athletic ability. Matt Furber, who has recently started work at Filton College, tests athletes at an elite level within all sports and has years of experience within his field. Using light gates to record speeds and electronic equipment to measure vertical jumps. Members of the PRIDE squad were given accurate measurements of their athletic ability that they can now compare with their American counterparts at high school.

Leading the way was cornerback and receiver Jordan Eaton (pictured) who is in his first of two years at Filton College. He recorded a 66.97cm vertical leap, which was among the best that Matt has ever witnessed testing within any sport. He also recorded a 4.5 second forty yard dash, showcasing his athletic ability.

He was not the only one excelling. Two thirds of the squad ran a sub five second forty yard dash, several achieving personal bests on a slow 3G astro turf surface. All players ran their forties in football cleats instead of spikes on a track. Players should further reduce their times when they do another combine this summer using the track with spikes.

In the vertical jump eight members of the squad achieved jumps of more than 50cms. They were also tested in the 20 yard shuttle and three cone drill. Five of the squad achieving 4.4 seconds or faster in the 20 yard shuttle and three recording 7.2 seconds of faster in the three cone drill. Players will use this data in their college applications, attempting to take the next step and gain the experience of a lifetime playing for an American College.
