Pegasus Academy of Performing Arts aims to launch the new band in September at Bristol's Filton College.
The band will be similar in make-up to college bands in America but will be open to non students as well as those studying at the college.
The senior section will be open to those 16 years of age and over, whilst juniors will be aged from eight to 15.
The band's aim is to be ready to take to the field in March 2011 when Filton College opens its new stadium at the WISE (West Institution of Specialised Education) campus in Stoke Gifford.
Spokesman Chris Child said: "Although we're not launching the band formally until September, preparations are already well underway.
"Our Colourguard [or flag spinning] is already up and running and now we're going to start to develop the wind and percussion sections.
"We have some experienced instructors in place but we're still looking for more."
The organisation also has an old boys and girls group which has begun practicing at Filton College on Monday nights.
Mr Child added: "The idea of our Monday night group is that people who may not have played for a few years can come along and get use to playing again.
"It's a bit like riding a bike in that once you've done it, you never really forget it."
